US President Joe Biden has told donors he may not be seeking re-election if Donald Trump wasn’t in the White House race, highlighting how opposition to the former Republican president is the main motivating factor behind his 2024 campaign.
“If Trump wasn’t running I’m not sure I’d be running,” Biden said at a Democratic party fundraiser in Massachusetts on Tuesday.
His comments come as the president has been grappling with low approval ratings and concerns among some Democrats about his ability to win another four-year term.
Biden, 81, sees himself as the most effective political weapon the Democrats have against Trump, after defeating him in 2020.
