Rovira says the preliminary agreement is “difficult to digest” and that ERC will stop supporting Sánchez if it is breached

The General Secretary of ERC with functions as president, Marta Rovira, has assured that the previous agreement between the Republicans and the PSC to appoint the socialist candidate Salvador Illa as president of the Generalitat “is difficult to digest”, and that if it is not fulfilled, the ERC will stop supporting the government of Pedro Sánchez.

“Agreements are there to be kept and we are very clear about that. And I think we have done that too power position to enforce that agreement, because if the agreement is not fulfilled, we will stop supporting the government of Pedro Sánchez,” he said in an interview on Catalunya Ràdio, collected by Europa Press.

Rovira has ruled out the ERC's entry into government: “First the PSC must show us that it is adhering to these agreements and first we want to see a PSC that is very different from the ones we have seen in recent years.”

The Republican leader believes her job in the next term is to “act as a tough, radical opposition” and has assured that she has not agreed on positions with the socialists.

Consultation with the armed forces

Asked what she thought would be the outcome of the consultation with the nearly 8,700 Republican activists, she admitted that it was “an agreement that is difficult to digest, that requires reflection, that requires evolution.”

Moreover, she is “proud that the party has finally been able to hold these debates of a political nature, because the party has been involved in too many days of intense debates.”

'Agreements are there to be kept'

When Illa asked him about the possibility of non-compliance with the agreement, Rovira said that he is very clear that agreements must be made to be fulfilled. He stated: “Does the threat of non-compliance prevent us from moving forward with an agreement?”.

“It is very exceptional that we have the opportunity to set up a federal committee of the PSOE that gives us guarantees for the compliance with this agreement and that includes international auditors,” he stated.

However, he also explained that for the implementation of the agreement, which requires a majority in the Congress of Deputies, they have 'plan B'.

Junqueras

Regarding the position of former ERC president Oriol Junqueras, Rovira said that Junqueras has always advocated for Catalonia to become more sovereign, for the country to progress socially, and that he interprets his message in 'X' “very clearly in this sense.”

He added that he does not want his opinion on Junqueras' positioning “to be used to create a non-existent division that is excessively fueled.”

Puigdemont

Regarding the former president of the Generalitat and Junts, candidate Carles Puigdemont has literally explained that his return must be of benefit to the independence movement and have political significance.

“She shouldn't have been held back,” added Rovira, who felt she should return in the same way she had.
