SCJN refuses free diplomas for UNAM graduates

The Second Chamber of the Supreme Court voted against free diplomas, seminars, master's degrees and title payments in UNAM.

With the vote of Javier Laynez, Luis María Aguilar and Alberto Pérez Dayán it was decided not to provide protection to students from FES Acatlán, due to the autonomy of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

The student took cover “payment as a condition of accessing a degree in any form; to diploma holders as a degree option.”

The majority of ministers voted against Minister Lenia Batres' project, which sought to confirm the decision of the Mexican State college court that access to diploma courses as a qualification requirement should be free.

The project that Minister Yasmín Esquivel took part in shows this “access to the diploma of The Juicio de Amparo in Criminal Systems of Convictions, as Expansion and Deepening of Knowledge Alternative II, by the complainant, because it is the degree option for the Bachelor of Laws taught by FES Acatlán of UNAM, in keeping with the principles of free higher education and the progressiveness contained in the Constitution, then education must be free.”
