31 people were injured in several fires in Essen – two children are in grave danger. Emergency services were deployed at three places at the same time in the evening, as announced by the fire brigade. Upon request, the police confirmed that they had arrested the suspect near the crime scene.

It is being investigated whether the fires are related to each other. There was a lot of smoke in all three fires, a fire brigade spokesman told the German Press Agency. The fire broke out in the stairwell of a residential building. Therefore, the exit route remains blocked for the occupants of the house.
Emergency services had to rescue people using ladders after residents caught their attention through windows. Two children are said to be in mortal danger. Another child and two adults suffered serious injuries and seven people had minor injuries. Eleven people were injured in another fire at a residential building in the city, and eight others suffered minor injuries.
