S&P 500 and Nasdaq post fifth loss in a row

Netflix: The streaming company is expected to report that revenue increased 13.6 per cent to $9.27bn in the three months to March 31, while earnings are expected to rise 57 per cent to $4.51 a share. Analysts will be keen to learn about the company’s subscriber growth after it hit a record high level of new subscribers in the fourth quarter, helped by a crackdown on password sharing.

Other companies: Blackstone, DR Horton and Alaska Air Group will report earnings before the bell.

US existing home sales: Economists expect that sales of existing homes in the US declined to 4.2mn in the year to March, down from 4.38mn in the year to February, as high mortgage rates deter homeowners from listing their properties.

Jobless claims: New applications for unemployment aid are forecast to have edged up to 215,000 in the week to April 13, from 211,000 in the previous week.

Fedspeak: Atlanta Fed president Raphael Bostic will deliver remarks at the Prosperity Partnership of Fort Lauderdale. New York Fed president John Williams will participate in a moderated discussion before the Semafor World Economy Summit. Fed governor Michelle Bowman will deliver opening remarks to the New York Fed regional and community banking conference.
