The “second family” of the Marín Naval Military School welcomes Doña Leonor

The Princess of Asturias This Tuesday, a day dedicated to the Virgin of Carmen, patron saint of the navy, for the first time contacted the Maritime Military School of Marin (Pontevedra), where the second course will take place on August 30 his military training. The Commander-Director, Pedro Cardona Suanzes, has “welcomed” Doña Leonor to what will be “her” second home. And he has assured him that in his companions he will find “a second family”. The Princess accompanied the Kings on the occasion of the traditional swearing-in ceremony of the candidates and the imposition of distinctions and the conferring of royal offices on the new officers.

The director of the Naval Military School (ENM) has dedicated part of his speech specifically to the heiress, to open wide the doors of the institution she will enter in just over a month. He recalls that he is beginning the same journey as his father, also in Marín, in 1986. He will do so, he said, with the support, affection and help of those who will soon become his companions. Who, like Doña Leonor, has emphasized: “They are also thanks to the Spaniards”those who 'serve'.

Commander Cardona also stressed that the 10 years of government of Felipe VI. There have been constant allusions to the Monarch's speeches, from which he has selected phrases as lessons for the candidates who swore their flag on Tuesday. “You have not sworn to do something, but to be something,” he explained to them. And for those who leave the school, having already become officers, he has said that they may have a sense of the end of the cycle. “Today nothing ends, everything begins,” he said.

The kings and the princess are accompanied by, among others, the Minister of Defence, Margaret Robles; the president of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda; the President of the Parliament of Galicia, Miguel Santalices; the government representative, Pedro Blanco; and the mayor of Marín, Maria Ramallo.

The event took place in a completely normal way, apart from the occasional fainting, almost at the end of the event, of a midshipman. The day was favourable: about 20 degrees and little cloud. The Princess of Asturias will have time to get used to the Galician climate. Fortunately, the rain of the past week did not spoil the event. Both the candidates and the new officers, among whom the 'number one' of their respective promotions stood out, received from the stands the affection of their families, who did not hesitate to encourage them. Among those who leave the school after receiving their office, ten students from Saudi Arabia and one from Peru.

One day after welcoming the newly crowned European football champion, Doña Leonor, accompanied by her parents, has already been able to see in which school she will enroll from the end of August. Just a few meters from the esplanade where the event took place, you will drop anchor the training ship Juan Sebastián Elcano, where it will be boarded next January.

The heiress left Zaragoza, where she was completing her first year of military training, claiming she felt “more capable.” If you know Galician hospitality, you'll no doubt feel part Galician after your stay in Marín.
