The United States rejects the decision of Spain, Ireland and Norway to recognize Palestine

This Wednesday, the White House expressed its rejection of the decision of three European countries, including Spainto formally recognize Palestine as an independent state on May 28, considering that the two-state solution to the conflict must be reached through diplomatic negotiations.

A spokesperson for the National Security Council stated in statements to US television CNN, cited by EFE, that while “the President (Joe Biden) is a strong supporter of a two-state solution and has been so throughout his career,” he believes that “ A Palestinian state must be achieved through direct negotiations between the parties, not through unilateral recognition.”

The Governments of Spain, Ireland and Norway announced the recognition of Palestine this Wednesday as a state, a decision that will be formalized on May 28.

Biden has repeatedly defended his position in recent months. At a public event last weekend, the president said the two-state solution is “the only solution in which people live in peace, security and dignity.”

The decision by Spain, Norway and Ireland comes in a context where Israel's bloody offensive on Gaza continues, and after the International Criminal Court (ICC) Public Prosecution Service this week applied for arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the leaders of Hamas, a decision heavily criticized by the United States.

Joe Biden's administration has been one of the main pillars of support for Israel since the start of the Gaza war in October, and therefore the Democrats' campaign is concerned about losing the support of groups such as youth or the Arab community, in particular light of November's presidential elections in contested states like Michigan.
