Mexico City.- TikTok Inc plans to shut down its music service in November, ending a years-long experiment to compete with Spotify Technology SA and Apple Inc, Bloomberg reported.
TikTok Music will be unavailable on November 28 and customer data will be deleted, the music division said in a post on its website.
Users are being asked to transfer playlists to another service by Oct. 28. A spokesperson for the London-based company did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment.
ByteDance Ltd, the owner of TikTok, created the music service to capitalize on the app's power and popularity among music fans.
TikTok videos have been credited with spawning hit songs and new artists, as well as sparking clashes with record labels who are demanding higher fees for the use of their clips. The app, originally called Resso, first launched in 2019, with the company hoping to funnel TikTok users to new services.
