America is in trouble China to keep up with shipbuilding. That is why the government is now focusing on establishing partnerships with South Korea and Japan. Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro visited the world's largest shipyard in Ulsan a few months ago.
South Korea is a leader in shipbuilding
According to “The Wall Street Journal” Del Toro is trying to convince companies like HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to invest in America. It can build ships efficiently and cost-effectively. Hyundai builds 40 to 50 ships a year, including warships for various countries.
In recent years, Hyundai Heavy Industries has emerged as a leading player in global shipbuilding. The company plans to triple its revenue from warship construction and maintenance by the end of the decade. Cooperation with the US could play a key role in this. However, shipbuilding for the US Navy is legally restricted to domestic shipyards.
Close cooperation in the field of maintenance
The US has been working closely with South Korea and Japan in areas such as ship maintenance. One example is the USNS Wally Schirra which was recently sent to South Korea for repairs. Hyundai expects similar orders in the near future.
