After a disappointing stint with the San Francisco 49ers marred by injuries and poor draft picks, former first-round pick Trey Lance is getting a fresh start with the Dallas Cowboys as the backup to star quarterback Dak Prescott.
While it's unclear when Lance will take the field for the Cowboys in the coming years, the University of North Dakota product was honored to be named one of three team captains Sunday in the team's preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium.
According to ESPN's Ed Werder, via the Cowboys' public relations department, head coach Mike McCarthy named Lance offensive captain, while also naming linebacker Damon Clark defensive captain and linebacker Buddy Johnson special teams captain.

While Lance's future in the NFL is uncertain as he will be backing up one of the best quarterbacks in the league today, the Cowboys seem to have a lot of respect for him and if something were to happen to Prescott next season or beyond, they would be looking to put the young quarterback in charge of the offense.
With the Cowboys hoping to become a legitimate Super Bowl contender this season, Dallas will prioritize Prescott's health and won't want to take unnecessary risks during the three preseason games, meaning Lance could see significant time on the field before Week 1.
It will be interesting to see if Lance can impress during this preseason to give the team even more confidence to hand him the keys if Prescott is eliminated or leaves the team in the near future.
