The UN Security Council on Monday passed a resolution demanding a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas for the first time since the war began.
The US abstained from the vote, which called for an immediate cessation of hostilities for the holy month of Ramadan — of which two weeks remain — “leading to a permanent sustainable ceasefire”.
The resolution also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas.
