US mortgage applications notch biggest monthly jump in a year in January

Ukraine aid: The US Senate is expected to vote on a $118bn bipartisan deal, backed by President Joe Biden, that would provide aid for Ukraine along with stricter immigration policies. The deal, which needs 60 of the 100 US senators to back it, is facing mounting resistance from congressional Republicans, who could ultimately torpedo it.

Disney: The US entertainment company will report its latest quarterly results as it faces a growing battle with activist investor Nelson Peltz. Disney is expected to post an uptick in earnings per share and revenue in the three months to December from a year earlier, but advertising revenue is forecast to have plunged 63 per cent to $1.3bn.

Other earnings: Uber, Yum Brands, Roblox, Brookfield Asset Management and Fox will report their earnings before Wall Street’s opening bell. PayPal, Coty, News Corp and Mattel will post their earnings after the market closes.

Fedspeak: US Federal Reserve governors Adriana Kugler and Michelle Bowman will make separate appearances. The presidents of the Fed’s Boston and Richmond branches, Susan Collins and Thomas Barkin, will also speak.

Biden: The US president heads to New York for his 2024 re-election campaign.
