More than half a million Venezuelans live in Spain, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). For many people, what begins as a chance to start over, ends up being a permanent life transformation. In the video accompanying this article, five Venezuelans share their experiences of life in Spain and the mixed feelings evoked by the news coming from Caracas.
Alfonzo Iannucci, a computer scientist and founder of a digital journalism project focused on showing the reality of Venezuelans in Spain, arrived in 2013 in search of “a better future for his son.” Axa Milà De La Roca, originally from Europe, arrived in the country to complete her university degree. Currently, he works on immigrant integration, with a focus on reducing disparities. Meanwhile, José Luis Morán, known as “El Gato Salsero”, is a singer and has been in Spain for more than 20 years. He is also a promoter of traditional festivals Virgin of Chiquinquirá in Madrid, an event that unites the Venezuelan community in the Spanish capital. Carlos Rondón and Ninibeth Texeira, a pair of entrepreneurs, arrived in Spain with the dream of creating their own business and “conquering the world.”
