Designated a cultural heritage site in 2001, Elda Castle sits atop a hill in the heart of the city, near the left bank of the Vinalopó River.
Its history dates back to the 13th century and began as an Islamic fortress before evolving into a feudal castle in the 13th to 16th centuries.
Over time it turned into a provincial fortress.
After a period of neglect until the end of the 20th century, efforts began for its restoration and conservation, including archaeological and architectural interventions.
The castle was once owned by prestigious royal and noble families such as Corella and Coloma and has important archaeological remains and historical buildings.
Major features include a large parade ground and a wall decorated with ten quadrangular towers dating back to the Almohad era.
Notable features also include a medieval and Renaissance chapel, the front wall, the barbican, round towers, an underground reservoir and a provincial staircase from the 15th to 16th centuries.
In addition, numerous palatial rooms serve residential and service purposes.
