Tennis star Nick Kyrgios has once again backed Piers Morgan after they criticised US Open winner Jannik Sinner.
The Italian won his second Grand Slam title this year on Sunday, beating American Taylor Fritz in straight sets to add to his Australian Open triumph.
The sinner came to the tournament because acquitted of failing two anti-doping tests when he tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid clostebol.
Early in the competition, he hinted at a cold shoulder from fellow athletes at Flushing Meadows, despite the charges being dropped.
Now Kyrgios, who has missed the game this year due to an ongoing wrist problem, is trying his luck again.
Morgan reposted a tweet from the official US Open X account that announced Sinner's victory on Sunday night, saying: “Sinner, sinner, US Open winner.”
“*after failing TWO drug tests. (Fixed it for you),” the TV presenter wrote.
Kyrgios then responded with his own answer, which was more than a little sarcastic.
Starting with a shrug emoji and then a yawning face, he referred to Sinner as the first Italian to win the competition and wrote: “For the first time in history! We are witnessing greatness!”
In March, during a competition in Indian Wells, Sinner's urine was found to contain wheelset, a steroid that can be used to build muscle mass.
Eight days later, another sample also tested positive for low levels of the virus.
He was given a temporary suspension, but because Sinner successfully appealed it, he was able to continue playing.
The International Tennis Integrity Authority (ITIA) found that Sinner was unintentionally poisoned with the substance by his physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi.
Naldi applied an over-the-counter spray available in Italy to the cut on his hand and then treated Sinner.
In August, ITIA accepted this explanation and acknowledged that the violation was not intentional.
Following this decision, Kyrgios called for a ban on the world's number one player.
Speaking about X, he said of the decision: “It's ridiculous – whether it was an accident or planned. You get tested twice for a banned (steroid) substance… you should be suspended for two years.”
“Your performance has improved.
“Massage cream… Yes, it feels good.”
Looking back on the past 12 months, Sinner said in his on-court interview: “This title means a lot to me, the last period of my career has been difficult.
“I love tennis, I train a lot for this stage, but I also understand that there is life outside the court.
“I would like to dedicate this title to my aunt. She is not feeling well and I do not know how much longer she will be in my life. She was very important to me and still is.”
It was double woe for the Americans, with Jessica Pegula losing in the women's final to Aryna Sabalenka.
