Venezuelan Parliament to Ask Maduro to Break 'All Relations' With Spain After Congress Supports Edmundo Gonzalez

Venezuela's Chavista-majority National Assembly will approve a resolution this Wednesday urging the government of Nicolas Maduro to break off “all diplomatic, consular, economic and commercial relations” with Spain, after the Congress of Deputies approved the recognition of opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia as president-elect.

Venezuelan Parliament convenes an extraordinary session this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. in Spain) to debate the rejection of “the crude and interventionist decision adopted by the Spanish extreme right” in reference to approval by the Lower House of a non-legislative proposal with no practical effect and with a total of 177 supporters thanks to the votes of the PP, Vox, PNV, UPN and the Canarian Coalition.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez urged members of the House's Standing Committee on Foreign Policy to “peremptorily” approve a resolution urging Nicolas Maduro's government to break off “all relations” with Spain.

“Let all the representatives of the legation of the Government of the Kingdom of Spain and all the consulates and all the consuls leave here and we will bring ours from there. Let them stay with their murderers, with their putschists, with their fascists, with their violent people,” he said.

Rodriguez also demanded that the resolution establish that “all commercial activities of Spanish companies cease immediately,” in response to what he considers “the most brutal attack” by Spain against Venezuela “since the time” when the Caribbean country was fighting for its independence, referring to the Congress' decision.

“That flights from Spain to Venezuela cease and that all commercial activities of Spanish companies cease immediately,” said Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly.

Rodriguez also threatened to show the Doha agreements reached with the United States government in September 2023 if that country “continues not to comply with the agreements.” “With a photo included,” continued the president of the Venezuelan Parliament, who threatened to show photographs, videos and recordings: “you will see.”

“We are prepared to do anything, except to give up our independence and sovereignty, and we are doing everything to defend the homeland of Bolivar and Chavez. We will win!” concluded Rodríguez, before receiving applause from the majority of the representatives of the Parliament.
