A beautiful European city has been named the best in the world for walking.
Rome in Italy took top spot in a list of the best cities to be explored by foot. GuruWalk compiled the list using bookings and visits data from the past year.
Lonely Planet described the city as “a heady mix of haunting ruins, awe-inspiring art and vibrant street life”. The “hot-blooded” Italian capital is considered one of the world’s most romantic places.
It is a very walkable city with most tourist attractions connected by car-free zones. Within walking distance of one another are the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Palatino, the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountain.
GuruWalk comments: “The sheer number of monuments it hosts sometimes causes tourists to not even know where to start. So it’s not surprising that Rome hosts more guided tours than any other place.”
The City of Seven Hills, also known as the Eternal City, has lots of restaurants, shops and cafes to explore as well as lots of museums and parks.
A short bus journey from the centre of the city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Church, Vatican City, which is a microstate and home to St Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and more.
Visitors have said that Rome is “the most beautiful city in the world” as well as a romantic and historic place with a friendly atmosphere. One said: “No matter how long you are there, you will always see something amazing you’ve never seen before.”
Those wishing to visit Rome can fly direct from airports across the UK and there are lots of places to stay around the city, from hotels to holiday lets.
