Ford Mustang goes retro for its 60th birthday

The Ford Mustang has been given a classic makeover in honour of the nameplate reaching 60 years in production.

Unveiled overnight, six decades after the Mustang broke cover at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, the Ford Mustang 60th Anniversary package pays homage to the 1965 model year pony car with various exterior and interior tweaks.

Unfortunately for local fans, none of the 1965 examples entering production are planned to arrive in Australia, with Ford’s Down Under division ruling out a local launch.

The 60th Anniversary package is exclusively available on Mustang GT Premium models, either as a coupe or convertible.

It adds 60th Anniversary badges on the front wheel arches and boot lid, 20-inch Dark Gravity Grey wheels with a machined face and Vermillion Red centre caps, optional side graphics, a mesh grille with silver side intakes and smoked headlights.

Three exterior colours are available: Wimbledon White (paired with body-coloured mirror caps), Race Red (with Iconic Silver mirror caps) and Vapor Blue (with chrome mirror caps).

Inside, there’s a numbered 60th Anniversary plaque on the dash, while a choice of Space Gray, Carmine Red or Black Onyx colourways are available for the cabin.

The Mustang GT’s 5.0-litre V8 engine is unchanged, continuing to produce up to 362kW and 567Nm in US-delivered examples with an active exhaust, driving the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission.

There will also be a wider update for the Mustang range, with its digital instrument cluster receiving gauges based on the 1967-68 model year pony car.

This will be made available via an over-the-air software update for cars already sold, though Ford Australia is yet to confirm whether we’ll see it when the car lands here.

As previously reported, the seventh-generation Mustang has been delayed for Australia multiple times since its September 2022 unveiling, with Ford most recently telling CarExpert it’s on track for an arrival in the second half of 2024.
