“A few days ago, in the very last part of the negotiations on the composition of the future college, you asked France to withdraw my name – for personal reasons that you did not discuss directly with me,” wrote Thierry Breton.
“For the past five years, we have fought tirelessly to defend and promote the European common good above national and partisan interests. It was an honor. However, in light of these latest developments – further evidence of questionable governance – I must conclude that I can no longer fulfill my duties within the College,” he adds.
A new French candidate
A few minutes earlier, Thierry Breton posted a message presenting a whiteboard as the “future European Commission” whose official presentation, delayed by a week, is expected tomorrow.
Paris must quickly nominate a new candidate for the post of commissioner.
