VARIATIONS ON THE THEME OF OPUS 33 DON JUAN
The gentleman from Seville usually goes to morning mass every day at the church of Soledad.
He doesn't do it out of devotion, no. Don Juan was never a churchgoer and was not tempted to be devout in his old age, having been a pagan in his youth. Attend mass, for many leading ladies come to hear, including some of those who had once offered him the warmth of their caresses. For don Juan, the best devotion is recalling those nights in his arms.
He saw a lady this morning. The lady preserved her beauty and her pride. She walks past him without looking at him and leaves. Don Juan says to himself in the darkness of the church:
– He is.
In the sunlight, the woman whispers:
– It was him.
See you tomorrow!…
