Plans announced for 2025 edition of Mexican Tennis Open

Acapulco set to host 32nd OlympicsAnd next year's edition of the Mexican Open, according to the Mexican Tennis Association (AMT) and the state Tourism Ministry (Sectur).

The tournament will take place from February 24 to March 1 at the GNP Seguros Arena. According to organizers, 60% of the tournament tickets have already been sold.

In a press conference, AMT chief operating officer Geoffrey Fernandez recalled that Category 5 Hurricane caused structural damage to the GNP Seguros Arena event complex. However, the arena was ready at the time tournament returns for 2024 edition in February.

Therefore, said Fernandez, “the 2024 edition is a magical and unique year.”

Fernandez said he expects the next edition of the tournament to generate 500 to 550 million pesos (US$25 to $28 million), surpassing the previous edition's revenue of 200 million pesos (US$10 million).

So far, players expected to compete include Germany's world No. 2 Alexander Zverev, who won the championship in 2021; Norway's Casper Ruud, who lost the 2024 final to Australia's Alex de Minaur; Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton of the United States; Holger Rune of Denmark; and Lorenzo Musetti of Italy.

A full list of players attending the event, Fernandez said, will be released in the coming weeks.

Fernández also announced the launch of digital tickets this year for the event, to prevent ticket resale.

Acapulco reconstruction continues

According to the Head of the Ministry of Welfare Ariadna Montiel, Acapulco reconstruction and Coyuca de Benítez after Otis cost 35 billion pesos (US$1.82 billion).

Simon Quiñones Orozco, head of Guerrero state's Tourism Department, said 1,000 rooms per month have been renovated in 236 hotels since Otis and he expects 16,000 rooms to be available in the Diamante and Dorada hotel zones by next February.

People are growing in confidence in Acapulco, he said, and the city's event schedule only reinforces that belief.

Quiñones expressed his gratitude to the sponsors and organizers of the Mexican Tennis Open, saying that thanks to the tournament, Acapulco's reconstruction process was “accelerated,” allowing the annual tourism industry conference Sectur, Tourist Tianguis and the National Banking Convention to be held in the city earlier this year.
