The amount of money spent on presidential elections has increased dramatically in recent years, and the 2024 election will be the most expensive in history, experts have concluded, according to the Independent.
The number increases rapidly every four years. In 2016, Donald Trump's campaign spent $422 million, less than half the amount spent in 2020. In the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden spent $1.6 billion, while Donald Trump allocated $1 billion.
This increase in spending began after a 2010 Supreme Court decision. This allowed for unlimited spending in federal elections.
Most of the money is spent on advertising, staff salaries and voter contact.
