FDP withdraws from German coalition, threatens cabinet collapse

As a result of the departure of ministers from the coalition, the German government was threatened with collapse. Without the FDP, Scholz could continue to lead a minority government.

Lindner, leader of coalition partner FDP, threatened to leave the coalition before his resignation. His resignation followed weeks of debate over the government's future economic direction.

Scholz said he fired Lindner because there was no longer a “basis of trust,” making it impossible to work together. “He has betrayed my trust too many times. “Under these circumstances, serious governance is impossible,” Scholz said at a press conference.

Scholz has proposed asking the Bundestag for confidence in a vote in January. If the government cannot survive the vote, elections could be held in March next year.

The liberal FDP of course demands sharp economic changes. This looks like a declaration of war on their left-wing coalition partners.
