Bernie Moreno, an Ohio Republican, has won a new seat for his party in the Senate after he defeated Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, who had been in power since 2007, according to NBC and Fox News, among others.
Previously, the party seized power from the Democratic Party in the state of West Virginia.
Republicans now retain leadership of the Senate by one vote, if Democrats do not manage to win their surprise new state.
All seats in the House of Representatives and 34 of the 100 seats in the Senate are up for election.
