Australia wants to ban young people under the age of 16 from using social media

The government made it clear in September that it wanted to ban children from accessing sites like Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, but no age limits were known at the time. The Prime Minister announced further details of the plan on Thursday. He said there was no exception for children who used social media, even though they had their parents' permission.

The government wants technology companies to implement the ban, wrote The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper. This means that children and their own parents will not be punished if they ignore these measures. Young people are not immediately prohibited from using social media. Parliament still has to approve the measures. This regulation will only come into effect after one year, said the Prime Minister.

Albanese also promised the ban would be evaluated once it is implemented. 'We are leading internationally on this and we want to make sure we get it right.'
