Brazil's Oscar nominee 'I'm Still Here' hits theaters this Thursday (7)

Brazil's representative at the 2025 Oscars, “I'm Still Here” by Walter Salles, opens this Thursday (7) in national cinemasafter receiving rave reviews at international festivals, such as Venice, where it won the award for Best Screenplay.

The film also received praise for Fernanda Torres' performance. The actress is Eunice, whose husband, former federal deputy Rubens Paiva, played by Selton Mello, was tortured and murdered by the Military Dictatorship in 1971.

The film is based on the book by their son, journalist Marcelo Rubens Paivaand was also awarded by the popular jury at the Vancouver International Film Fest, in Canada, and at the Mill Valley Film Festival, in California, in addition to the award for Best Actress in an International Film for Torres, at the Critics Choice Awards, in Los Angeles.

“This is a film that talks about politics, about living in an authoritarian country, about what it means to choose to live in an authoritarian country or not and ultimately live, and how this can change your family, your emotional relationships. So what I love about this film is that it shows compassion. It is resistance through compassion, it is very beautiful”, said Torres, who considers her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, her oldest character in the film.

The actress, along with her co-stars, is now seeking to win the votes of members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
