People close to Trump will jockey for influence. Which vision of ending the war in Ukraine will be realized?
The Wall Street Journal noted that the plan to end the war is similar to the concept presented in September by Vice President-elect J.D. Vance. According to his proposal, Trump could propose an agreement in which Russia would defend occupied Ukrainian territory and demilitarized zones would be built along the current front lines, while the Ukrainian army would be reinforced in the event of another conflict with Russia. Moscow will also get assurances that Ukraine will not join any military alliance, including NATO.
According to WSJ predictions, various factions with different views will struggle to influence Trump's foreign policy in his second term. For example, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is considering a run for defense secretary, could push for an agreement that would not be seen as a victory for Russia. In turn, Richard Grenell, who is expected to serve as secretary of state or national security adviser, may be willing to agree to greater territorial concessions to Russia to speed up the end of the war.
