Fraud alert with fake Gmail emails and apps

Security firm ESET is warning about a scam circulating via email that seeks to steal banking and personal data under the alleged pretext of a special promotion for the well-known shopping platform's anniversary.

The scam was carried out through fake emails pretending to be a sponsor of Mercado Libre and simulating a special promotion for the company's 25th anniversary.

The sender of these emails includes names such as “ML rouleta”, “Ruleta Nueva”, “Gire ML”, “ML Online”, and uses the brand's characteristic logo and colors, to inspire trust by posing as MercadoLibre.

“In the three identified cases, Brazilian companies appeared as email advertisers and not MercadoLibre,” ESET explained.

The email leads to a fake site that tempts the victim with an alleged special promotion to celebrate the platform's anniversary and after answering a 5-question survey, the victim is taken to a roulette type game with the promise of important discounts on the site's product purchases.

Once you win a discount, you will be redirected to the Hotmart payment platform, which will force you to pay by credit or debit card for a non-existent product, and you will never get it, consolidating the fraud and compromising the integrity of the product. data at risk.
