The opposition has called for “Mozambique Independence Day” on Thursday and thousands of people have followed suit. Their leader, Venâncio Mondlane, insisted that he was the rightful winner of the October 9 presidential election. The official winner was the candidate from the Frelimo Liberation Front, which has been in power since independence 49 years ago, Daniel Chapo. Since then, at least 18 people have died in a police crackdown on protests.
