Frozen oceans existed on Mars 3.6 billion years ago

Recent research suggests that Mars may have it sea in the Northern Hemisphere about 3.6 billion years ago. Data collected by China's Zhurong rover and observations from space indicate the existence of geological structures modified by water or ice. While it cannot be confirmed for certain that these changes were caused by the ocean, evidence suggests significant interactions with water.

Zhurong arrived on Mars in May 2021, in Utopia Planitia, a region thought to possibly be an ancient ocean coastline region. Research has shown that in the south of this region there are signs of water-related processes that are independent of the amount of water present. But to the north, there are geological features that seem to require more water.

In the scenario proposed by the researchers, the ocean would initially freeze, and over the next 230 million years the ocean would gradually shrink until it completely disappeared.
