Italy needs more soldiers and reserve forces truly ready to act if necessary, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said today, quoted by Italian news agency ANSA.
“An operational reserve as a means of registration in the event of a crisis is urgently needed, and staff numbers must be increased to ensure full functionality,” Crosetto said at a hearing before the Italian Senate's defense and foreign affairs committee.
He added that cuts to the armed forces imposed in 2012 should be reversed, saying they were “children of another era”.
“It is also important to rejuvenate the armed forces, supporting generational change,” added Crosetto.
