Following the breakup of the traffic light coalition, the CDU/CSU opposition called for new elections to be held sooner than those targeted by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). General elections will be held in the second half of January, CDU chief Friedrich Merz said in Berlin. “There is enough time for this, there is enough preparation in all parties, in all constituencies. (…) There is absolutely no reason to wait until spring next year.”
