New bridge facilities are being built in Melnik, the “Public Relations” department of the Municipal Administration – Sandanski informed. The new facility is located near the so-called “Roman Bridge” in the city and will provide transport access for people living in the “Melnishka Reka” area, said the settlement's mayor, Sasho Filipov.
“We have a very old and original bridge, very nice, but it is not intended for cars to pass over it. Only intended for pedestrians. “We are prohibited from using the existing bridge because it is declared a cultural monument and we have no other alternative,” explained the Mayor. He gave an example, there are around 50 residents who live in the “Melnishka Reka” district who have no other way to get to their homes. That is why the City of Sandanski allocate funds and begin construction of a new, modern bridge.
The city government explained that the total length of the new facility and its approaches is 32 meters and four meters wide. Provision of sidewalks and internal guardrails for pedestrians is planned. The bridge will be made of two lanes with separate guardrails.
With the implementation of infrastructure projects, one of the most attractive tourist towns – Melnik, will significantly improve communication links, says the Sandanski municipality. Construction of the facility should be completed by the end of this year. Melnik's population is 250, the town's mayor said.
