Scientific research vessel (NIK 421) “St. Cyril and Methodius” today sailed on its third expedition to Antarctica. The solemn ritual of its send-off will be held at 12 o'clock at the Naval Base in Varna, the Higher Naval School (VVMU) in the specified city. This will be the start of the 33rd Bulgarian expedition to Ice Continent.
Before departure, the “EnduroSat” laboratory will be opened on board NIK 421. This station is for receiving, processing and analyzing data from space-based land and sea surface monitoring systems. In addition, it allows monitoring of ship traffic, ice drift, pollution and hydrometeorological situation.
The crew of “St. Cyril and Methodius” will consist of 34 people, three of whom are women, according to ship commander Captain II rank Radko Muevski. The ship is expected to dock near the Bulgarian base on Livingston Island in about 50-53 days. According to the captain, the stay on the Ice Continent would take around 45 days.
And in this expedition there will be cadets on the ship NIK 421, said the head of the VVMU to BTA fleet admiral Prof. Kalin Kalinov. 20 young people, two of whom are Romanian citizens, will sail to Cartagena, Spain, then return to Varna. Four other young people will be on board NIC 421 during the trip.
