With her income of 125,000 euros, Wilma Murto clearly exceeded the grant limits

Vilppa Salon pole vaulter Wilma I broke up Taxable income rose to six figures last year. A little more than 125,000 euros was recorded as income.

In 2023, Murto achieved World Championship bronze in outdoor track, European indoor championship and, among others, competition victory in the Diamond League. The prize money alone accumulated over 50,000 euros during the season.

In January, the jumper was awarded a major grant of 20,000 euros from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the year. Taxable income in 2022 amounts to approximately 76,000 euros.

Grants can be awarded if the income is less than 80,000 euros or a competition award that “can be clearly demonstrated” exceeds that amount. A criteria for the scholarship is also that the athlete's “financial position is not sufficiently secured by other means”.

With last year's achievements, Murto managed to pass the figurative grant threshold. Therefore, he belongs to the rare group of Finns in individual sports who have earned relatively large sums through sport.

This year there has been a lot of bad luck both in terms of performance and money. For example, the Diamond League competition was missed due to injury.
