In a statement given in the Rose Garden of the White House, acting president Joe Biden congratulated Donald Trump and the Republican Party on their victory in the presidential election. Biden stressed the importance of a peaceful and orderly transition, in keeping with US democratic traditions.
“For more than 200 years, America has conducted the greatest experiment in self-government in the history of the world,” Biden said. “Yesterday I spoke with President-elect Trump to congratulate him and assure him that I will coordinate across my administration to facilitate a peaceful transition,” the president continued.
Biden is focused on reducing tensions and maintaining respect between citizens, whatever his electoral preferences. “I hope we can lower the temperature of the political debate and shed light on the integrity of America's electoral system,” he said, adding that the fight for “the soul of America” is an ongoing process.
“Elections are competitions with different visions. “We accept the choice made by the people,” Biden said. “You can't love your country only if you win, or love your neighbor only if you agree with him.”
