Israel: the beginning

Shadow of the Colossus (1966) is not a good film. But based on real events, it shows a key moment in History, with consequences that are very important to this day. Set in 1947, the film depicts the arrival of an American Jewish colonel, Colonel David 'Mickey' Marcus (Kirk Douglas) in the newly formed state of Israel.

Marcus' mission was to advise on the formation of the Haganah, the forerunner of what we know today as the IDF – the powerful Israel Defense Forces. Surrounded by enemies, the young state was in serious danger of destruction in the early stages of its existence. Yet they survived this war and others that continue to this day.

Directed by Melville Shavelson, Shadow of the Colossus has a strong cast: Senta Berger, Angie Dickinson, Topol, Frank Sinatra, John Wayne and Yul Brynner, among others. Making a cameo as the jeep driver is a very young Michael Douglas, in his first film role.

Shadow of the Colossus available on Oldflix.
