An Israeli tourist, identified as 20-year-old Shlomo Rein Negev Tobiana, arrested last Tuesday, 7, after calling two black workers monkeys, was released after a custody hearing this Thursday.
The crime occurred on Boipeba Island, in the municipality of Cairu, south of Bahia. Israelis are also accused of trying to bribe police officers to avoid being arrested. On the G1 portal, Police Chief Tiago Campos said the victims called the police and showed them videos of the crimes committed.
At the police station, those involved were questioned and arrest reports were made for crimes of racial slurs and active corruption, without providing bail. Israel's defense claims that the situation is nothing more than a false accusation followed by a misunderstanding.
The tourist's lawyer said that he had a disagreement with the porters when he got off the ship and that confusion occurred again when he left the tourist destination, two days later. The defense argued that the video made “without the client's consent” did not show him saying the word monkey, but rather a third party, whose voice was recorded in the background sound of the video.
