Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will meet with Greek Foreign Minister Yorgos Gerapetritis in Athens today as part of a new diplomatic dialogue to resolve a complex and long-standing dispute, the Associated Press reported.
The aim of their meeting was to explore whether a favorable framework exists for a possible future resolution of their disputes over the extent of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean.
“Step by step, we have reached a level of trust so that we can discuss this issue sincerely and prevent a crisis,” the Greek Foreign Minister said in an interview published on Thursday with Turkish newspaper Hurriyet.
At today's talks, officials in Athens are expected to raise concerns about rising illegal migration, as Greece has recently faced a surge in illegal migrant arrivals from the nearby Turkish coast.
Despite deep differences of opinion on the situation in Israel, the two foreign ministers are expected to look for ways to improve regional stability.
The talks will help lay the groundwork for a high-level Greek-Turkish cooperation council planned for early 2025 in Ankara, Türkiye, according to the Associated Press.
