Gleisi Hoffmann, president of PT, used Twitter/X to criticize the base rate hike in Brazil. The social network put a warning on the message, considering that the decision to elevate had the support of Gabriel Galipolo. This is President Lula's candidate to lead Banco Tengah (BC).
Already postGleisi called the Monetary Policy Committee's (Copom) decision to raise interest rates “sabotage of the country's economy” and “total irresponsibility”. Copom is a collegial body, and its members have the right to vote — one of whom is Galipolo.
The decision to increase interest rates was unanimous, namely that it received support from candidate Lula. The decision in favor of Galipolo was contained in BC's statement on the increase. The Twitter/X message in Gleisi's post clarifies this context.
Increase in interest rates
The social media post also contains link to text bank with the vote of Copom members, as well as the new interest rate value. The committee set the increase at 0.5 percentage points.
With this decision, interest rates rose to 11.25%. This is the same level that Copom set in January 2024.
