A 62-year-old Croatian citizen extradited from France, wanted by Croatia on suspicion of committing war crimes against prisoners of war, was handed over to prison in Osijek on Tuesday, Croatian news agency HINA reported, citing a statement from Vukovar-Srijem district police today.
Police said that in 2021 and 2022 criminal charges were filed against him by the Osijek District Prosecutor's Office on allegations that in early October 1991, together with other suspects, he committed war crimes against captured members of the Croatian army and police in the towns of Cerich and Mirkovci.
Based on a European arrest warrant issued by the Osijek District Prosecutor's Office, the 62-year-old man was detained on October 5 at the Calais border crossing in France as he entered from the UK.
