Archaeologists have discovered the bones of at least three mammoths near the city center of Brno, Czech Republic, Czech News reports.

Finds from the Old Stone Age include mammoth bones as well as hunting weapons. The discovery is unique due to the large number of remains, Lenka Sedlachkova of the non-governmental organization “Archaya Brno”, who is the lead author of the study, told the ChTK institute.

Archaeological excavations were carried out on the occasion of the reconstruction of the road heating pipes. Initially found the remains of a young mammoth and several stone artifacts. After that the excavation continued towards the church of “St. Wenceslas”, where the old city cemetery is located. Finds from the Middle Ages were discovered there. But apart from that, archaeologists also found stone tools and animal bones.

We found two vertebrae, fragments of a femur, part of an antler apparently adapted for hunting, and other stone artifacts. Such a discovery inside the city, among the buildings, seemed truly extraordinary, Sedlackova said.

The archaeologists have requested assistance from the Anthropos Institute and the Center for Cultural Anthropology at the Moravian Museum.
