Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today said that he sees no logical explanation to hinder Türkiye's long-standing bid to join the European Union as a full member, Anadolu Agency reported.
Erdogan addresses the European Political Community Summit in Budapest.
There is no logical explanation for the years-long blocking of the EU accession process for candidate countries like Turkey, which have made significant contributions to the continent's prosperity and security, the Turkish president said.
The negotiation process for Türkiye's accession to the EU began in 2005. To become a member of the EU, Turkey had to successfully complete negotiations with the European Commission, which was carried out in 35 negotiating chapters. Negotiations have stalled in recent years.
Erdogan today also called for “real cooperation” from the EU in the fight against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and FETO (Fethullah's terrorist organization which Ankara says was behind the July 2016 coup attempt).
He also stated that a humanitarian tragedy was unfolding in the Middle East, “bigger than the war in Ukraine” in terms of destruction and civilian casualties.
The year-long genocide in Gaza is a shame for humanity, the Turkish leader said once again.
