German Chancellor Olaf Scholz canceled a planned visit to Baku, where he was scheduled to participate in the UN climate conference COP29 next week, after his center-left cabinet collapsed, DPA reported, citing a government spokesman.
Scholz will not travel to the Azerbaijani capital next week to attend COP29 “due to the current political situation”, a government spokesman said.
Initially, the German Chancellor's visit to Baku was planned for Monday and Tuesday. Scholz's visit was canceled as the political crisis in Berlin escalated and the ruling triple coalition collapsed following his decision to fire Finance Minister and Free Democratic Party leader Christian Linder.
Representatives from around 200 countries are expected to join COP29, which started on Monday and will continue until November 22. The main focus of this year's conference is the allocation of financial resources to poor countries to meet their green transformation needs.
