Phil Rosenberg, President of the Board of Deputies, said: “The horrific scenes in Amsterdam last night, where Jewish and Israeli football fans attending the Ajax-Maccabi Tel Aviv match were attacked, should shock us all.
“Some people have compared the situation there to a 'pogrom'. Based on the reports we've seen so far, it's hard to disagree.
“We want to see peace exported to the Middle East. Those who import violence must be dealt with with the full force of the law.
“We will be speaking to police and the UK government in the coming hours and days to ensure there is no repeat of this incident in the UK. We will also work closely with the Dutch Embassy to ensure that they understand the gravity of this incident.
“I have contacted Ruben Vis, CEO of the Dutch Jewish Community, to offer our full support.”
