Kingdom of Poland, Warsaw, circa 1878. Stanisław Wokulski, a wealthy merchant, walks along the Vistula River. “In cities divided by Austria and Russia, coastal districts remained poor, inhabited by lumpenproletarians, workers and the criminal world, like Solec and Powiśle in Warsaw,” he wrote in the book “Wisła. River biography” by Prof. Andrzej Chwalba.
