We are talking about the draft amendments to the Criminal Code prepared by a group of parliamentarians from the Left, KO and Trzecia Droga. The proposals presented in it largely repeat the bill's assumptions of partially decriminalizing abortion, which disappeared in the Sejm in July. The first reading of the provisions took place on Wednesday. Lawmakers from PiS and the Confederation then called for it to be rejected entirely.
However, the Sejm did not agree with this. On Friday, 216 MPs voted against the project, 232 against and four abstained. This means that these regulations will continue to be processed. They will now serve in parliament's extraordinary committees.
New law on abortion. What is included in this project?
This project repeals par. 1 and par. 2 art. 152 of the Criminal Code Based on the first, termination of pregnancy with the woman's consent, apart from the exceptions specified in the Law, is punishable by imprisonment for a maximum of three years. However, the second provision provides the same punishment for assisting a pregnant woman to terminate her pregnancy or inducing her to do so.
This means that aiding or inciting abortion cannot be punished. A person who performs an abortion with the woman's consent will not be punished if less than 12 weeks have passed since the start of the pregnancy.
