North Korean leader Kim calls South Korea a “foreign country”

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un described South Korea as a “foreign and clearly hostile country.” He also warned against using physical force if North Korea's sovereignty is violated, the North Korean People's Army's KCNA state news agency reported.

It was only on Thursday that North Korean state media reported for the first time that the revised country was South Korea “clearly defined as an enemy state”. The day before, Kim Jong Un blew up all the highways and trains between North and South Korea. It is seen as a symbol of possible reconciliation between two hostile countries.

In late 2023, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un demanded for the first time at a meeting of his ruling Workers' Party that South Korea be designated as the main enemy in the country's socialist constitution. He also described inter-Korean relations as those between two warring countries.

The two countries are still officially at war because the Korean War of 1950-1953 ended with a ceasefire and not a peace treaty.
