In the opinion of the Commission, the areas in question should in particular include open air spaces near hospitals or school buildings, public transport stations, playgrounds etc. And “emerging products such as heated tobacco or tobacco” that are increasingly affecting very young users should also be banned.”
Goal: a “tobacco-free generation”
“The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently highlighted the negative effects of exposure to second-hand emissions from these emerging products, including significant respiratory and cardiovascular problems,” points out Brussels, which repeatedly emphasizes the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.
Tobacco currently kills more than 8 million people a year worldwide, including 1.3 million people exposed to secondhand smoke, according to the WHO. The European Union aims to achieve a “tobacco-free generation” in 2040, where less than 5% of the population would still use tobacco, compared to around 25% today.
