Genaro García Luna was sentenced to 38 years in prison

Mexico's former Secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Luna, was sentenced this Wednesday in a New York court to a total of more than 38 years in prison plus a fine of two million dollars, for drug trafficking and organized crime crimes, and for profiting from millions of dollars paid by Sinaloa Cartel.

García Luna, 56, who listened unperturbed to the sentence, was head of public security during Felipe Calderón's six-year tenure, in government from 2006 to 2012, when he was responsible for the entire anti-drug strategy.

Judge Brian Cogan, in his final speech at the sentencing, accused her of leading a double life, “combining her role in her beloved family with another role as facilitator of a vast criminal enterprise” in the service of the Sinaloa cartel. .

He is the highest-ranking Mexican official convicted so far in the United States, and his case is similar to that of other leaders, such as former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández, who was sentenced to 45 years in prison last June, also for drug trafficking crimes.
